Spoleto Festival USA: 2017 Edition [fr]

Spoleto Festival USA was founded in Charleston in 1977 and has since established itself as one of the world’s leading festivals. This year, artists from around the world including three French companies will perform from May 26 to June 11.

Among the diverse line-up, several French artists are included in this year’s edition of Spoleto Festival USA:

  • COMPANY WANG-RAMIREZ - Monchichi May 26 to 28, 2017
Ballet- and martial arts-trained Honji Wang and gifted former B-boy Sébastien Ramirez transcend boundaries with Monchichi—a duet that draws on their own backstories to develop a new language. Ramirez—French with Spanish origins—crosses cultural and choreographic paths with Wang—born in Frankfurt to Korean parents—to create a portrait of a new, urban, mobile, and intercultural generation. Hip-hop meets contemporary dance in this emotionally sophisticated performance.
  • MURMURS - A show by Victoria Thierrée Chaplin May 26 to 29, 2017
What if objects could speak their own personal histories? What if walls could breathe out stories of disappointment and desires? Aurélia Thierrée returns to Spoleto Festival USA (Aurélia’s Oratorio, 2007) with Murmurs—a dreamlike, largely wordless rumination on a woman’s adventure into a surreal and shifting landscape—her second collaboration with Victoria Thierrée Chaplin. Innovatively using set design, objects, and puppetry to transform everyday things into manifestations of the soul, Murmurs straddles the delicate line between imagination and madness.
  • COMPAGNIE XY - Il n’est pas encore minuit June 6 to 11, 2017
Returning to Charleston after their triumphant Festival debut in 2013 (Le Grand C ), Compagnie XY brings a new piece of French circus—this time, a metaphor for the ways in which humanity faces instability and imbalance. In Il n’est pas encore minuit, skillful bodies in motion evoke aspects of the human experience: the inevitable fall, the state of weightlessness, the euphoria of uplift. This program is supported by the FACE Contemporary Theater fund as part of Kids Trail, a program of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy dedicated to children and families.
