Long stay visa for studies : minors - under 18 years old

You may apply for a visa at the Consulate General of France in Atlanta if you are a resident in the following states: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee (please provide a copy of your driving license).

1. Long stay visa for minors who study in France

Minors of less than 18 years old are not requested to apply for their own residence permit in France.

Minors who hold a long stay visa to study in France are allowed to reside in France for up to 11 months according to the validity of their visa.

2. Do I need a visa?

Yes, except if you are a citizen of Switzerland, Andorra, Vatican, San Marino, Monaco or of the European Economic Area :

3. How to make an appointment?

For security reasons, all applicants have to appear personally at the Consulate General of France in Atlanta.

The visa section is open to the public on an appointment basis, with no walk-ins allowed.

No appointment can be made by phone or by e-mailing us. If you are not able to attend, please free a slot by canceling your appointment.

Make sure you bring all the required documents when coming to the Consulate General.

It may take about 21 days for all other nationalities.

Applications can be processed up to 3 months from your departure date.

5. Requirements

The visa section does not make any copies, you must bring your documents and the required copies.

- Original passport or travel document (+ one copy of the identity pages) valid for at least three months after your return to the US. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years ago, be valid for at least fifteen months and have at least 2 blank visas pages left.

- One application form filled out completely and signed.

- Two (2) recent ID pictures (white background, full face, no glasses nor hat, closed mouth taken less than 90 days ago) .

- Processing fee

School documents :
- Transcript for the current school year;
- Registration in a French school (original + 1 photocopy).

- Parental authorization and copy of mother or father’s passport/photo ID.

- Letter of host family agreement signed by both parents of the host family in France with proof of legal status in France (photocopy of national identity card or residence card, if the host is a foreigner).

- Proof of financial resources:
If the stay is managed by an organization specialized in school and educational exchanges, a financial guarantee statement must be provided by this organization.
If the parents provide the financial means for the stay in France: a letter from your bank stating you possess sufficient means to support your child with a minimum amount of $ 820 per month of stay in France. A financial guarantee statement must also be provided.
If the host family provides the financial means for the stay in France, they must provide a financial guarantee statement ("Engagement de prise en charge par l’accueillant en France") and they must include proof of income.

- A record of immunizations or letter from the family doctor stating when the child received the anti poliomyelitis and the DTP (diphtheria, pertusis and tetanus) shots.

- Proof of insurance : full health and liability coverage for the student overseas for the entire duration of their stay (original + 1 photocopy).

- If the child is not a U.S. citizen: a valid U.S. permanent residence card ("green card") or a valid U.S. visa with valid I-94 or valid I-20, or an Advance Parole document (original + 1 photocopy).

- A self-addressed prepaid EXPRESS MAIL envelope from FEDEX and UPS. You may use one envelope per family. The Consulate General of France in Atlanta cannot be held responsible for loss of mail leaving the consulate.

6. Important information

The consular administration has full authority to evaluate and request more documents than those submitted by the applicant.

Please be aware that submitting the aforementioned documents does not guarantee the approval of the visa.

Please note that holders of visas are still subject to immigration control upon first entry into France. The visa itself does not grant the right to enter France.
