From the desk of the Consul General (Summer 2020) [fr]
Dear French and American friends,
The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed our daily lives. It has reminded us of the interdependence of our world and the importance of international cooperation. Diplomacy in all its forms – political, cultural, scientific, economic and academic – remains essential. That is why the staff of the Consulate General of France in Atlanta and the entire French diplomatic network in the United States has been and will remain fully mobilized to support the French community and to ensure the continuity of our partnerships with our American friends and allies.
I am well aware that this completely new context poses many challenges. In order to safeguard public health, it is important that we remain cautious and vigilant in order to limit, if not stop, the spread of the virus. I encourage everyone to follow the recommendations of local authorities as well as to regularly consult our website and social media accounts in order to stay informed of the latest consulate news. Furthermore, I encourage those of you who have not already done so to add your information to the Register of French nationals living abroad so that we can remain in contact.
In light of the current situation, we have had to reimagine consulate projects. Traditionally, every July, we gather to celebrate the values of the French Republic and the dynamism of the French community in the U.S. Southeast during our Bastille Day event. This year, we will mark July 14th with a virtual celebration that will include a series of online events highlighting the importance of solidarity.
An activity that we have had to put on hold in order to comply with local health guidelines is the organization of Legion of Honor ceremonies for American WWII veterans. In June, we commemorated two important dates during this period of history: the 80th anniversary of General Charles de Gaulle’s call to Resistance on June 18, 1940 and the 76th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on June 6, 1944. As a French person from Normandy, and as Consul General in Atlanta, I want to resume our organization of Legion of Honor ceremonies as soon as possible. If you know a veteran who contributed to the Liberation of France during the Second World War, I invite you to let us know by following the application procedures on our website.
Social and physical distancing does not diminish the ties of the heart. I can assure you that the staff of the French Consulate General in Atlanta is doing everything possible to be of service and to welcome you in conditions as similar as possible to that which you are accustomed. I wish you all a wonderful summer. Take care of yourself and your loved ones.
Consul General of France
