24 French teachers from across the U.S. Southeast participated in this year’s Summer University at the University of Mississippi in Oxford from June 29-July 1, 2015.

Organized in partnership with the Department of Modern Languages of the university, this year’s program focused on teaching French with games in the classroom and brought together 24 French teachers from Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Oklahoma.

Haydée Silva, Professor at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and classroom game specialist, conducted the three-day workshop which offered numerous sessions and immersion activities. The teachers discussed the potential of the games in the class as gamification has been identified as an innovative and effective language teaching tool, allowing teachers to reach out to the students.

"Using games in the classroom allows the teachers to diversify how to teach and the students how to learn," Haydée Silva explained.

"This workshop has equipped me with a wealth of resources and ideas to implement in my French classroom," said Stephanie Coker, assistant professor of French at Oral Roberts University. "I greatly appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues, to share tips and techniques and to benefit from three days of French immersion."

Supporting the professional development of French teachers is one the French Embassy’s priorities; as such we offer free sessions all over the United-States throughout the year. To learn more you can subscribe to our educational bulletin.
